'Produce 101 Rigging' PD Ahn Joon-young rejoins Mnet
one year after release from prison
PD Ahn Jun-young, who was sentenced to prison for rigging Mnet's "Produce 101," has reportedly rejoined Mnet.
Mnet is giving him one more chance, considering his sincere desire to reform.
Mnet announced today (March 3) that "PD Ahn Jun-young, who left the company last year, has rejoined the company," explaining the reasoning behind the rejoining, saying, "We decided to give PD Ahn another chance in light of his sincere reflection on his past mistakes and his desire to play a role in restoring trust between Mnet and individuals."
This comes more than a year and five months after he was released from prison in November 2021 after serving a prison sentence for leading the manipulation of the audition program "Produce" series.
Although Mnet said it accepted Ahn's reinstatement out of consideration for his will, viewers who were deceived by the program still reacted coldly. The show's reputation was tarnished by the vote-rigging controversy, and some of the trainees who trusted the show were also harmed.
IOI, the first girl group to emerge from the series, was unable to reunite, and WannaOne's reputation was also tarnished.
I*zone was stigmatized as a "manipulative stone" after their Fiesta album was interrupted and they were unable to extend their career as fans had hoped, and X1, the last group to be produced, disbanded shortly after releasing their debut music.
There are many more boys and girls with broken hearts, but Mnet has since relaunched the renamed audition program, debuted Kepler on Girls' Generation, and is currently conducting auditions for Voice Planet.
Ahn PD was accused of manipulating the results of viewer pay-text voting for all four series of Mnet's "Produce," as well as receiving tens of millions of won worth of entertainment hospitality from five entertainment agency officials on multiple occasions between 2018 and 2019.
The court sentenced Ahn PD to two years in prison and a fine of 37 million won. Ahn appealed, but was found guilty on both the first and second counts, which went all the way to the Supreme Court. Ahn PD was released from prison in November 2021 after serving his full two-year sentence.
